The Wealth GAP

The Issues of our education system.

In America, the median amount of wealth for white families is over $132,000, while the median amount of wealth for Black families is only about $11,000. This shows that white families have substantially more wealth and assets than Black families. Moreover, this too can be partly attributed to the Achievement Gap. Students with higher test scores go to better schools, and people who go to better schools tend to make more money, in the long run, to invest with. For example, students at Princeton, on average, are making $150,000 a year by the middle of their career, as opposed to the $51,000 that the majority of other college graduates will make. This is likely due to the opportunities and connections that one acquires while at such a prestigious school. Although, low test scores can be a barrier to enter wealthier schools and on average, one’s future income will reflect that. Black and brown children are more likely to attend less prestigious schools making them more likely to acquire less income and wealth on average.

Employment Rate

This probably goes without much explanation, but people who do well in school are more likely to be employed. Black men have a higher unemployment rate than any other group in the country. Black men also tend to have the worst test scores and the lowest grade point averages...

Incarceration

Education inequality also plays a large role in creating the disparity in incarceration rates. In America, Black Americans represent one-third of the prison population while only representing 12% of the country. This can partly be explained by the high dropout rates within the black community...

Representation

Inequality crises are the lack of representation in positions of power. Black and brown people are underrepresented in Congress, Senate, as judges, doctors, lawyers, and many other positions that play a large role in guiding the functionality of the country...

Cause

No one really knows what is exactly causing the Education Inequality crisis. The cause seems to be a collection of issues that stem from various oppressive moments in American history. However, studies show that one thing is very clear. MONEY IS ONLY A SMALL PART OF THE ISSUE!!!!! Many studies have shown that when low-income Black and brown neighborhoods are thrown tons of resources they do not do any better than they did before. However many organizations trying to solve this problem still look at a difference in funding schools as the primary cause of the education inequality crisis. If we are to solve this problem we must accept the data and realize that, while funding is important, new laptops are not going to close the gap. Innovative approaches to education will.
